A man put poison on the feet of the image of Jesus to kill the priest, but when he went to kiss His feet, Christ lifted them up and changed color: the miracle of the Black Christ or Lord of the Poison

This is the incredible story of the miracle of the image of the Black Christ, also known as the Lord of Poison, which took place in 1602. It is still on display today in Mexico's Metropolitan Cathedral and is one of the most venerated in the country. Every year the faithful gather in the Cathedral to celebrate the feast of the miraculous image of the Lord of Poison. Watch the video above or read the text below.

It was 1602 in Mexico City. In a Catholic seminary called Porta Coeli there was a life-size image of Our Lord crucified. One of the local priests had the devotion of saying his prayers in front of the image and kissing His feet at the end, repeating this pious act every day.

In the same town, a citizen robbed and killed another, bringing him a great sense of guilt. He couldn't bear it and went to church to confess. The priest wanted to give him divine forgiveness, but said he also needed to hand himself in to the police and serve his sentence. But the man wasn't willing to pay for anything and stormed out of the church. In his religious ignorance, he even thought that the priest might reveal his sin to the police. So he poured poison on the feet of the image to kill him and hid.

When the prayers were over, the priest bent down to kiss Christ's feet, but miraculously the image began to bend its knees, lifting his feet away from his face. At the same time, Jesus turned black from head to toe. The criminal witnessed everything and fell to his knees, crying, asking Christ for forgiveness and handing himself in to the police.

PRAYER TO THE BLACK CHRIST

“I pray to you,
That, just as you saved the life
Of His Most Illustrious Lordship
When, by means of your most sacred body
They tried to poison the one who was about to kiss your Divine Feet,
I beg you, adored Lord,
May the poison of sin
No longer penetrate my heart.
Make it clean,
By doing all the works that please you.
This is what I ask of you in honor of
Your admirable transfiguration,
Through which you manifest
Your infinite power.
So be it.”
